Baby and mum checklist - from a mother of 2 (very soon Insya Allah 3)

Kalu ikut banyak je baby checklist ni..boleh je amik mana-mana pastu compare dan maybe combine

Anyway, kita mmg tak pernah tulis full checklist..Cuma sbb pregnant no 3 ni tersangatlah tak update blog ni.

So here the basic checklist for mom & baby..

Clothings:

  • Tops / Pants / Rompers – beli masa OK baby warehouse sale, mana baju lama yg elok kita recycle, sorry baby ibu tak boleh beli semua baru…zaman GST ni kena berhemah. I am not fancy rompers during newborn (sebab pakai baju butang tu lg senang..rompers tunggu besar sikit). Baju jalan-jalan maybe tak payah beli sebab kemas hari tu banyak je baju Afham & Alif yg elok lagi
  • Mittens & Booties – dah beli masa baby expo Mid Valley
  • Baby socks – maybe kena beli baru, banyak yg dah hilang pair
  • Baby binders / Barut baby – guna yg dah ada
  • Thermal Blankets
  • Swaddling Blankets – banyak jenis pulak..tapi swaddling blankets ni lebih kepada mcm bedung..yg elok lagi rasa cam ada 2-3 so tak payah beli kot, lgpun selalu pakai kain lampin tuk bedung (Malaysia kan panas…so pakai kain lampin lagi senang kot…bedung moden tu takpela tak payah beli)
  • Hats – dah beli masa baby expo Mid Valley
  • Bibs – recycle je mana yg ada…tapi kita tak guna bibs awal-awal cuma bila dah start solid food baru guna
  • Muslin Squares / kain lampin – wajib beli sbb kita memang bedung baby pakai kain ni, baby muntah/muak pun pakai ni
  • Wash cloths – tak perlu kot sebab kita mmg selalu bawak extra kain lampin…

Nursery:

  • Baby Cot – dah ada, cuma haritu dah leraikan sbb nak simpan..so just tinggal kena pasang balik, tak semestinya beli tau sbb kita haritu masa anak 1st excited beli la. Walau tak fully utilised (sbb co-sleeping) tapi still berguna
  • Playpen / Playard (Optional)
  • Mattress - Latex / Fibre / Foam -  dah ada
  • Mattress Protector / Waterproof Pads – optional, tak perlu kot
  • Mosquito Nets – ada yang macam payung tu dan jugak untuk kat cot (together with net stand)
  • Bedding Co-ordinates (Cot Bumpers, Fitted Sheets, Comforters, Pillow &a Bolsters) – dah ada
  • Musical mobile – maybe beli 1 tuk letak kat cot
  • Chest Of Drawers – kita pakai bakul baju ajelah
  • Bedding set – tilam baby lama dah pun takde lagi. dulu masa tu blom ada sangat tilam baby kekabu. This time beli set tilam baby kekabu, dah beli kat GM Klang. Kalau tak beli baby cot pun xpe, janji ada tilam baby (esp those yg breatfeed, lagi senang co-sleeping..sbb dah mamai2 tak larat nak letak balik baby dlm baby cot)

Bathing & Grooming:

  • Bath Tub – dah ada
  • Bath Seat / Bath Bed / Bath Net - tak beli sbb tak perlu kot
  • Sponges – erk tak perlu
  • Toiletries (Baby Bath, Baby Oil/Lotion, Baby Powder etc) – last time guna sebamed for baby bath. Minyak telon dah beli (ada suka minyak yuyi tapi kita pakaikan kat anak bila diorang ni dah besar bila time sakit perut)
  • Bath Towels – done
  • Cotton Wool Balls / Swabs
  • Cotton Buds – dah ada
  • Baby Comb & Brush – baby comb dah hilang, hmm maka kena beli kot
  • Baby Nail Clipper / Scissors – have it, so no need for new one
  • Bath Thermometer – pakai tangan je
  • Nasal Aspirator / Cleaner – dah hilang, kita beli la 1, Sterimar pun beli sekali  harung jugak
  • Medicine Dropper / Dispenser – ni dapat dari klinik je..xpayah susah-payah beli
  • Plastic storage – recycle balik yg dah ada, kalau nk yg murah beli je kat Daiso bekas kecil..gunanya simpan minyak telon, bedak, baby oil, sikat, sepit kuku..

Changing & Diapering:

  • Changing Table – not necessary for me, tapi kalau korang ada space dan budget beli la
  • Changing Mat – yg lama cam dh buruk, tak beli lg yg baru
  • Baby Wipes – dah beli masa Baby Expo
  • Disposable Diapers – tho cloth diaper is good, belum cukup tabah nak pakai..dah beli Huggies 2 pek masa Baby Expo
  • Nappy Liners – tak perlu kot
  • Diaper Rash Cream – pakai tepung ubi je

Feeding:

  • Steriliser & Bottle Tongs – dah ada, still elok
  • Feeding Bottles & Teats – BPA free, hmm maybe beli 1 je sbb dalam pantang direct feeding, habis pantang kena start train sbb nk hantar nursery (ok time alif dulu, payah nasib last-last kakak nursery tolong…end up pakai putting biasa pasang kat storage bottle)
  • Teat & Bottle Brush – maybe kena beli stock extra sikit sbb lagi banyak botol dan storage bottle kena basuh
  • Pacifier & Pacifier Holder – don’t think will use it…ni depends pada baby (Afham dulu pakai, Alif tak pernah…maybe sbb masa Afham fail bf, Alif plak mmg tegar susu ibu)
  • Drying Rack / Organiser – dah ada
  • Bottle Cleanser / Detergent – beli pureen jek

Breastfeeding

  • Breastpump –  (done, a pair of new breast shield sempat beli masa baby expo Mid Valley dan nanti kena beli adapter baru untuk spare (used to have 2 since 1 simpan ofis, 1 lg kat rumah..I think the original still ok, cuma yg extra dh kaput. Last time beli bp dari Ajasu http://www.mybreastpumpshop.com/ dan dh tanya kena servis bp atau tak jawapannya kalau xde pe-pe xpayah )
  • Ice pack - I think no need to buy new one
  • Cooler bag – recycle je ape yg ada
  • Tote / carrier bag – ok tak payah beli baru sbb ada beg freestyle dan jugak stylo mama bag
  • Storage bottle - a lot…sempat beli masa baby expo Mid Valley
  • Ziplock storage bag - sempat beli masa baby expo Mid Valley
  • Electric Bottle & Food Warmer - have it
  • Nursing Tops - have it, might need to get2-3 new ones…lol biasala perempuan lagipun baju lama tu dok ulang tayang pakai 3 tahun jugak, tggu dalam pantang la beli
  • Nursing covers - have it..just need to wash again
  • Nursing bras - new one..erm at least 7 kot! Dlm pantang nanti kot beli
  • Breast pads (Washable and disposable) – washable dah ada, disposable nanti la kita beli
  • Nursing Pillows – have it, but usually guna masa awal-awal je pun
  • Nipple Cream – pakai breastmilk je

Laundry:

  • Clothes Detergent – dah beli, laundry pun dh settle
  • Clothes Hangers – need to get, anak bertambah hanger pun bertambah…nasib dah beli tempat sidai baju haritu, maklumla weekend memang selalu basuh baju banyak
  • Clothes hangers with clip – rasa kena beli jugak sbb yg lama dah tercabut , ni untuk gantung mitten booties
  • Laundry Basket – optional for me
  • Pails – optional, tapi sbb baldi kat rumah dah nazak, so mmg kena beli jugak

Travelling Necessities:

  • Stroller – old stroller dah hazab (walau tak berapa guna) sbb tak simpan elok…letak depan rumah, so kaler dah kelabu asap, macam kena beli tapi baby expo skrg selalu ada contest (dah cuba nasib, cuma kena tggu result kot2 ada rezeki baby) or will only get it after dah deliver
  • Head & Neck Supports – optional kot, tengokla macam mana bila beli stroller
  • Clip on Fan – memang kena beli 1
  • Car Seat – have it (we have 2..1 lebih sesuai kat baby, lg 1 sesuai untk toddler)
  • Baby Carrier – I have SSC snuggbaby, tapi sekarang babywearing dah banyak option, perhaps guna je ape yg ada..beli baru membazir
  • Nursery Bag With Foldable Changing Mat – dah ada, but usually I prefer Snuggbaby diaper clutch that I used since Afham daripada guna foldable changing mat

Safety & Monitoring:

  • Baby Monitor – not important for us
  • Baby Thermometer – super duper important, have it but need to find the extra cap/ cover sbb alif dulu dah hilangkan yg extra, erm beli kat farmasi kot

Confinement:

  • Confinement set – dah beli set NR. Dapat harga RM250 including postage (Insya Allah ori walau harga jauh lagi murah dr website NR)
  • Vitamin – this time Shaklee, tggu gaji bulan 9 ni
  • Pati ikan haruan -  dah beli kali ni Harwany..dulu-dulu beli Polleney
  • Bengkung – dah ada 2
  • Maternity pads + Normal pads (heavy and low flow) + pantyliners – dah settle
  • Socks – maybe kena beli 1-2 baru, tgkle cmne
  • Slipper – even dah pakai sock, pakai gak slipper dalam rumah…slipper lama elok lagi so tak perlu beli
  • Tungku – last time penah beli tungku elektrik, tapi sbb dah lama tak pakai tak berani dah pakai…tapi cam takut nak pakai tungku elektrik sebab kan ada kes tungku tu meletup..lepas survey kita beli tungku pakej tungku tanah liat ibu dan anak (link)
  • Kain batik – dah banyak
  • Mandian herba - untuk mummy dan juga baby (kita suka TYT) , sempat beli masa baby expo Mid Valley
  • Disposable panties – important for me masa those early days. Dah beli pun
  • Getah ikat rambut – ok ni penting sebab beli berapa banyak pun hilang..time pantang la ikat rambut sepanjang masa.so kita beli bundle kat Mr DIY je
  • Kakak / makcik urut bersalin dan cukur rambut baby – masa bersalin Alif, totally urut kat Hospital Putrajaya tapi ya Allah lambat jugak dapat turn, nasib la tak bentan/ demam (tapi yg best siap buat penutup pantang). Pregnant kali ni badan banyak angin, cam rasa lepas deliver kena urut jugak…Hmm dulu husband kerja dekat + flexi okla dia hntar gi urut kat Hospital Putrajaya, tapi ni dia dah kena jauh dari rumah. Bibik kat nursery pun boleh urut lepas pantang. Husband kata ok je berurut Hospital Putrajaya. Kakak urut bersalin tu kita kena contact gak sbb nk cukur rambut baby nanti

Others

Dah beli masa OK Baby warehouse sale
  • Tuam baby – dah beli sekali ngan tungku set kat atas
  • Set pengurusan uri – sekarang dah ada org jual online, tapi kita just beli kain putih…nak kena check cangkul ada tak kat rumah (sbb kita bkn jenis berkebun..last time husband sibuk beli cangkul kecil dlm kelam kabut nk tanam uri)
  • Minyak selusuh – masa 1st pregnant, mak mertua bawakan, masa 2nd beli BioSelusuh…anyway dah beli pun BioSelusuh dan dah start amalkan (eh tapi ada hari terlupa)
  • Stock dried food and things – sbb dlm pantang, kalau keluar pun bila perlu (hospital), maka sblm deliver kenalah plan tuk stock up dried food (milo, biskut, barang-barang dapur kering) dan jugak stock up barang-barang rumah (cam sabun cuci pinggan, berus gigi and so on).

Compared to 1st pregnancy, I think nowadays it is much easier to find maternity cum nursing wear.

A lot of online shop selling bf friendly clothes (especially jubah...). But I still need some shirts that can match with skirt / palazzo.

Last time, I shared here where to find nice and kawaii maternity cum nursing shirt. And since some of the old shirts show wear and tear (plus I wore it almost 3 years....come on la kan, tak kan asik pakai baju lama, kena ada sikit baju baru tak?)

So I shared what I love (and of course thinking to get it) from http://www.mammahouse.com/. Most of it can be wear during pregnancy and nursing (due to cutting). Dan semstinya labuh menutup aurat!

I think a lot of blue hue here (since Friday, my office wear corporate shirt in blue...so I think I don't want to be alien on Friday..so its better to wear something blue).

They still have this design!!! Which I have it earlier

How to tell your boss that you are pregnant?

Ok first thing first I am not pregnant, but while doing super spring cleaning I found this (haha never though I keep it until Alif 1 year 9 months!)

For first pregnancy I do not have any problem to tell my boss, maybe because it was something that people can expect. Newly wed and of course within first year of marriage people will surely asked "bila nk mengandung?"

But when it comes to second (plus the gap was considered close), I have to say that I had a hard time to tell my boss...

So what I did previously, I came to her place and talk slowly "Boss I need to tell you something" After that I wrote like above sticky note...Then she asked "how many weeks?" Again wrote in the same paper.

Then she smile and said "Good what..." Phew what a day.

I just realized that I can simply sms her to break the news (skrg lg senang sms, whatsup, wechat je ngan boss). Pfttt...haha maybe masa tu xboleh pk kot

So how about other mommies? Do you keep it secretly from your boss until the baby bump showed?

The naked truth : anak rapat selang setaun..

Hoho budget tajuk xingat..mcm ala2 investigation...

I hope my entry will not make mum to be with no 2 become so scary....this entry is just like some sort of luahan rasa (xtau la ada ka nk baca?)

Eh lupa mesti org budget ala anak rapat selang setaun pun bkn smpi 5-6 anak...fine..xpa..tu masing2 punya hak la...

When I found out that I'm pregnant with no 2 Afham just about 7 months plus...emotion was high and down..mixed feeling whether I can cope with the responsibilities...the truth that until now I consider myself not a good mum..maybe trying to become better mom

The fact that or the past 2 years plus I don't have enough sleep, bad time management, haywire life, rumah tongkang karam, baju x jumpa...ini itu ntah kat mana2. And of course never ending enough sleeping. I have to admit that sometimes I am not really sick, but I am just too tired and need some rest (of course in this case sleep), so I will tell my boss that I am on MC. But suprisingly most of the time when I met the doctor, they scan give MC with reason that I have s slight fever..pelik tp benar...ntah emosi dan badan buat jd demam kot

And actually I think I've become I-dun-care-what- people-say...sbbnya when most of collegue knew that I'm pregnant with no 2...mostly will say cepatnya..power seh and so on..but on the other side there still some collegue that say some good word like 'xpa anak rapat ni..penat time kecik2 ni...' and the truth people still talk...we cannot stop them...even alif hits 1, while afham 2 yo..ada jumpa kwn2 lama bila tnya umur anak...diorg komen 'powerla setaun satu'....ok just smile and then lantaklah labu dah berkali2 dgr imunkan sajalah telinga

I would say its super tiring physically and emotionally..I dun have me time, no massage, no social life, not making more friends and so on..in fact I lost my patience a lot of time...husband pun pening kata apesal la asik terjerit2..ok jerit2 marahkan anak, pukul bila dah tahap maksimum hulk hogan..

Ok I will continue part 2..not enough time to express the whole motherhood tiring stories..

You can get baby items at discounted price plus free gifts, but you have to aware that there always a lot of people...sesak cam ikan sardin

Pregnant in style, nursing in style...and its 2 in 1!

When I found out that I was pregnant (afham), I was totally clueless when it comes to maternity wears. I always see pregnant woman in maxi, or typical pregnant dress.

Later, after searching thru net I found 2 in 1 maternity and nursing shirt! I just love the ideas because at least it can be wear not only for 9 months (the only things u might end up wearing it again and again). Until now I do not have maternity dress, perhaps because I prefer shirt to match with pants...lgpun ulang alik kerja naik public transport, mcm leceh pakai maxi, dress ni

But back to 2009 not much option that match my taste. So most of my maternity cum nursing wear bought from http://enjoybreastfeed.com/ (as I found they have shirt 2 in 1 design Japanese..kawaii for me!)

First pregnancy..my 2 in 1 shirts..leh refer entry ni

As time passed by, the shirts do have wear & tear signal (masuk mesin, asik dok ulang pakai..lama2 berbulu, dn koyak sikit)..so during confinement (alif), I started to shop online, and the good thing this time more option available...rambang mata...but I tried to limit, beli sikit2 (tapi sikit2 lama2 jd bnyk gak)

So today I share few website where u can find 2 in 1 maternity and nursing wear. On top of that, I always consider shirt can be 2 in 1 (because some of pic below not really fit for pregnant, but more on 2 in 1 pumping/ nursing and office wear). For time being bye bye poplook ( hajat hati nk jugak try 1 tp bila fikir balik keje kdg2 terus g mkn luar, lg senang susukan alif pakai nursing shirt.)

Oh ya to my suprise even tho I' m wearing either maternity and nursing wear or nursing and office wear, most likely it is not noticeable...some even kata cantikla baju, mana beli....bla2 then when I told the shirt is for bf also, thay stated to raise eyebrow...xcaya kot smbl nk carik mana nk selak2 untk susu/ pam..haha

I received a lot of compliments while wear this shirt. The shirt is mumdreams label (http://mumdreams.com.my/estore/), but bought it from http://mypermatahati.com/shop/

Still my favourite maternity and nursing wear online shop http://enjoybreastfeed.com/ . Yang kotak2 coklat tu husband kata cam baju Yuna..

Cantik tak? Ada opismate kate nmpk cam selesa betul shirt, the black one I wore during photoshoot. All bought from http://www.mammahouse.com/

Bought it during baby expo..all under autumnz label http://www.autumnz.com/

Last but not least all the way from Johor...http://milakids.com/. Yg xsyok blh tak pakai bj biru belang2 tu ada yg kata 'ko pregnant ke?' mebi sbb cutting loose sgt kot

(some design might no longer available at above online shop..but no worries they still have other nice options..kdg2 baju sama rega lain2, so ni kena tpuk dadala..tp klu dh kenan smpi xleh tdo, haruslah beli..hehe)

Eh sume gambar atas sume model cam tak aci plak kan..so letakla gmbr sdiri gak

sume ni nursing wear...

Amacam, betulkan mengandung pun boleh bergaya, menyusu pun boleh bergaya...dan boleh berjimat since 2 in 1

Later I will share other online shop that sell nice maternity and nursing wear...till then..

Tips, checklist, A to Z for mom to be..

Disclaimer : This entry written based on personal opinion and observation. It night be long, but really hope worth reading. Another thing there is a lot of hyperlink to my previous entries and also from other blogger/ site

The moment of joy

I believe the moment that we found out that we're pregnant..its something really new experience and of course somehow it might be clueless

I wont write in details, just some kind of general notes..the rest blh google jelah kan?

A. Pregnancy
1. Antenatal check up - you can choose to have check up with gov clicnic, private clinic / hospital. The choice is yours, as long as you have proper check up. For those plan to have check up with gov clinic, you read some tips here

2. EDD - EDD give is just an estimate...you might end up have early/ on the EDD itself or overdue. Sume ni kuasa Allah kan? so kita boleh doa sahaja baby selamat dilahirkan

3. Problems - eg bleeeding in early pregnancy, miscarriage, pre-eclampsia - you might have smooth sailing pregnancy while some ended with problems. Remember each pregnancy is unique, so get some professional advice and be patient.

4. Hormones and emotion - Yes pregnancy can produce a number of conflicting emotions

5. Common discomfort and complaints - Cramp, constipation, nausea, heartburn, tiredness and so on. Some might have it for temporary esp first trimester and end of pregnancy but some have almost 9 months!

6. Healthy eating - Most would say eating for two..but personally I believe eat moderately as afraid might end up with overweight pregnancy which can lead to other problems.

7. Wardrobe and looking your best - I believe nowadays pregnancy do not limit ur fashion (except myself..both pregnancy rasa cm selekeh..). A lot of choices nowadays and the good thing you can wear it even after delivered..like maxi so on. But for me I prefer to have 2-in-1 maternity and nursing bra, maternity and nursing blouse/ shirt (most shirt worn here are 2 in 1..ramai xperasan pun kan) . Oh ya pregnancy hormone also can affect the colour and texture of your skin..jgnla terkejut pelipat2, ketiak ka tiba hitam semacam..

8. Preparing for your little one - I believe around second trimester is the best time to start shopping for your little one. The good thing for those stay in KL/ Selangor, you can have wider option from baby expo and warehouse sale. You don't need to buy the whole mall before the arrival of lil ones

9. Third trimester discomfort - false alarm, braxton hicks, plus kicks counts

B. Breastfeeding choice
The first food for ur baby is milk, and of course breatmilk is the best

Dalam Islam pun dinyatakan klu mampu bf until 2 years. Once u become mother u'll know how certain mothers so fanatic on bf to the extend ada yg smpi berperang kat internet - mcm gelar anak2 yg minum FM (formula milk) ni anak lembu and so on

Learn about bf as much as you can - books, net, forum so on. Personally I prefer to learn through books because it written and covered topic by topic, while thru net you might not sure where to start

C. Antenatal, breastfeeding & hypnobirthing class
It is not a must. But I really encouraged for first time parents to be attend the antenatal class. At least both of you get the general idea esp the labour process.

If you have extra budget and time, you can attend breastfeeding and hypnobirthing.

I think around second trimester is the best time to attend such classes. Dont wait until the last minute.

Some classes conducted for free while some you have to pay for the materials & food. You can check around through internet or simply make few call. Sblm terlupa like myself bersalin di Hospital Putrajaya, tapi gi kelas antenatal KJMC...so xsemestinya gi kelas antenatal KJMC, bersalin kat KJMC jugak. But certain place ada yg hanya bukak kelas untk patient yg bersalin di situ

Notes on antenatal class here and bf class here

D. Choice in childbirth
1. Natural birth-involves the use of breathing and relaxation technique termasukla hypobirthing, some need assistance - episotomy, vacuum in order to deliver ur baby

2. Caesarean birth - in case you cannot deliver normally, the option is caesarean

3. Water birth - you can check Dr Halina's post here on water birth experience. I found blogger post here the water birth cost is RM6k++

Get some general idea on how each process will take place..at least adala idea sikit2 nk persiapkan diri ke labour room

Learn few terms like episiotomy, epidural, enthonox, pitocin, forcep delivery, vacuum extraction...Ok nanti bakal2 ibu ingat cam nk g peksa plak...no-no just gain as many knowledge as u can, so at least bila misi kata sy nk bg pitocin, anda start pk bukan2

For second time mother, if you have caesarean previously you still can have VBAC (vaginal birth after caesarean). Talk and discuss with your gynea/ expert

E. Birthplan
hehe bkn kawen aje ada plan..nk bersalin pun ada plan

1. do you wish to have with u during labour-husband, mother? Klu kt malaysia bersalin normal biasanya nowadays blh je husband temankan...believe me husband will be become our best partner ever..

2. can birth partner remain with u if u have caesarean or forceps delivery? Tang ni kena tnyala doc awal2...but normally csect husband xleh masuk..pe2 pun tnyala kt doc tmpt nk bersalin tu

3. pain relief, which sort do u want? Ha tang ni susah nk kata sbb masing2 tahap tahan sakit berlainan...klu rasa nk epidural mintak awal sbb certain stage, dh dilated 6cm above dia xbg..

4. are u going to breastfeed? Insya Allah sume nk bf kan? for those bersalin kt swasta inform awal2 nk bfkan baby...for gov hosp most likely mmg encourage bf...I really encourage time kt hospital ni jgn segan2 tnya psl bf ni..even u can ask them about marmet (teknik ni amatla bagus untk dipelajari sbb ftwm ada potential nk tertinggal pump parts ..so time2 nila sesuai praktis marmet)

F. Choosing hospital, father friendly, baby friendly
On top of this I believe budget will come first, govt or private is ur own personal choice. Father friendly means that husband can accompany while in labour room. Baby friendly for hospital support breastfeeding

Buat yg beragama Islam dan mampu sebaik2nya pilihla doktor perempuan untuk monthly checkup. Kita baca sini ye untk lebih lanjut

G. Hospital bag
Get prepare around 32 weeks. My checklist posted here. Insya Allah will revisited and update later, since actually you can pack 1 bag standy at home (in case kena stay lama kat hospital then barulah breastpump berguna...and extra things like pampers so on)

H. Cord blood
This is something consider new in Malaysia..its not a must, but an optional...and of course its not free. If you have extra budget, you can opt for it (jd retis gak yg untung...sume co nk sponsor brg baby and even cord blood)

I. Labour and birth
Show, water breaking, contractions. 3 stage of labour.

For first time mum usually xsure cmne contraction kan..klu rasa xyakin blhla ke hospital, but u might end up kena balik rumah balik sbb false alarm. BUT if waterbag breaking..air ketuban dh pecah, sila terus ke hospital..penting sgt sbb baby kan diliputi air ketuban ni, klu air ketuban dh kurang bahaya

J. Islamic birth
Azan & iqamat, tahnik, cukur rambut, akikah, khatan, menamakan anak dgn nama yg baik, tanam uri dgn segera

Hukum mencukur rambut di sini ye

K. Confinement
Confinement pun kena la ada sedikit sebanyak plan
1. How long - 30 hari? 44 hari? 100 hari?

2. where - kampung? rumah sdiri? rumah MIL?

3. whom will take care - mak, MIL, or maybe confinement services (ok pricey, tapi klu dh xde mak/ mak dh tua sgt ini antara option- cth shadira, ireetouch, jemari tradisional so on- for further testimonial sila google ye)

4. confinement regime - learn a lil bit confinement regime..pantang makan minum, urut, tungku, bengkung so on...ikut tak ikut tu ikut diri masing2la kan...

5. confinement massage - I have to write this, for those S'gor/KL u might be suprise it will cost u..kdg untk 3 hari dh beratus2. Plus please survey and book in advance...weh glamer tau makcik2 tukang urut bersalin ni. Some even offer massage so on and even stay in house. some just basic package

6. breastfeeding plan - ok during confinement u can stock up ur milk! esp those FTWM (full time working mom)..bkn pe kdg dh start keje, stress..time mgmt-keje vs pump..so on susu pun maybe ada naik turunnya..so stok2 ni akan berguna di saat memerlukan. For those have confinement at kampung, don't worry u can transport ur frozen EBM safely. U can refer her entry here (fatih, pinjam ye...malas nk taip bnyk2)

L.Post natal
Lots of post natal issues like post natal depression, getting back into shape, tiredness vs relaxation, hair loss so on. Talk to ur gynea if you are unsure

Oh ya please do not forget to have pap smear (if not mistaken a month after delivery)

M. Newborn
You might find the first weeks at home with ur new baby quite difficult. Don't worry its learning process

Newborn care - how to hold new baby, bathing, dressing, breastfeeding technique, sleeping, crying, colic and so on. OK sila jgn ingat baby hanya tido...baby tido kejap2 je, kejap2 nk susu..

N. Immunization

You will be given baby book which there is table of compulsory immunization. You can opt to get it at klinik kesihatan or clinic. But if you choose KK you have to be prepared with long hours waiting (like pregnancy check up, except this time with ur lil one)

Beside compulsory immunization, you can have additional jab eg rotavirus and pneumococcal - posted here. Recently ada kata nk masukkan rotavirus as compulsory but not sure when it will be implemented (ok I just realised something..ada kata rotavirus ada babi, but ada plak yg kata org g haji pun kena amik rotavirus..then cmner ye? erk...dh terlepas dua anak amik rotavirus)

O. Childhood illnesses
sickness, diarrhoea, high temperature, fever, refuse to eat/ drink, teething.

Some temporary solution posted here.

Lupa plak klu demam blh la jeram ngan air asam jawa...bancuh asam jawa (mcm nk masak) lps tu lumurka kat badan, kepala anak.Insya Allah suhu badan akan turun

P. Insurance and saving
Start early. It is not a must to save certain amount, but sedikit2 lama2 jadi bukit kan? Having insurance and saving at least will make parents be prepared for the children future esp when it comed to education cost

For saving, if plan to have 2 in 1 plan, you can open SSPN account - saving and at the same time you can cliam for tax deduction (current claim max RM3k)

Q. Family planning
There a lot of option for family planning. But each comes with pros and cons. Discuss it with your husband and gynea.

Some might found that they are not suitable with certain type of family planning - cthnya ada yg susu jd sikit (so bf mommy klu yg amik family planning jenis pil kena tnya dl doc), some even having heavy bleeding, irregular menses, headache and so on

If you're in final trimester please talk and plan with ur partner, even u can ask ur gynea..don't wait to last minute because you might end up having a close gap pregnancy (yg xkisah tu xpelah, bkn pe being working mum, anak rapat2, cost of living..blh stress jugak tu)

Breastfeeding also can consider as natural family planning, or known as LAM. LAM is 98% - 99.5% effective during the first six months postpartum. So sooner or later u still need to thing about family planning!

R. Nursery, baby sitter, parents, parents in law, maid
You have to decide whom will taking care ur baby once u back at work. So start early (even u not yet delivered)

You can check from neighbours, friends to find for the trusted nursery/ baby sitter. The cost range from RM 200 - 300, besides there is overtime esp if u working late.

Each option have pros and cons, klu hantar anak nursery bersedia la kdg2 dlm beg tu ada brg baby lain - kes tersalah masuk brg, senang berjangkit penyakit

S. Back at work
Once u back at work, the timetable might be totally change..You might need to slot pumping session between juggling with work, and of course a lot change..You might rush urself because u'll missed ur baby soo badly. Beside no more such working on weekend (if possible), and no karaoke session with collegue (haha..this apply to me...mmg xpernah ikut karaoke)

T. Adjusting with the whole family
Your life will change a lot. And believe me you will learn to adjust almost everything

My personal exp? hmm masa mula naik kerja (ni time afham je ada), balik rumah salah sorg akan letih xingat dan tdo awal...pstu mcm take turn isnin selasa - ibu jaga afham, ayah tdo awal, rabu khamis - ayah jaga afham, ibu tdo awal...and it last for a month jugak kot..skrg xde dh. dua2 dh biasa (get to use, tp serious letih la)..

U. Baby and u
Ok tak tau nk letak header pe...but most likely anything related to ur baby..issues like playing and learning with toys, baby massage, travelling with baby, keeping ur child safe, teething and so on so forth.

Some even started early education..ada yg kecik2 lg dh ajar mengaji..ni ikut masing2lah kan, all parents want to provide the best for their children

V. Introducing solid
I would recommend once ur baby hit 4 months, it time for u to learn homemade solid food. You can refer few website and join facebook group (HSFFYB) . Commercial baby's food is expensive and homemade solid food will save some $$ plus kasih sayang. Don't worry u don't need to become Masterchef to cook for ur little ones.

My compilation of homemade baby food posted here

W. Milestone and development
From grip ur finger tightly, lift head, smile, cooing, laugh, roll ball, talking and to the first baby step.

Baby's development - sight vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch, talking, social behaviour, mobility, play

Remember each babies have their own and unique development. For example some can walk before hit their 1st birthday while some later..talk to expert/paed if you have major concern

X. Natural parenting
Known also as "asuhan alami" - breastfeeding(BF) , babywearing(BW), cloth diapering (CD),homemade solid food, homeschool. The choice is urs!

Y. Read and learn from others
Read more books and learns from others..kakak, mak , atok, mana yg baik kita blh teruskan, mana yg xberapa elok/ sesuai pandai2lah kita elakkan

Believe me sometimes it can be stressful, ada kata cmni, ada kata cmtuh..if anything unsure talk to expert (at least they know better

Z. Enjoy motherhood journey
It might be tough, but u'll enjoy it.

Forget about stretch mark, long hours in labour room and so many motherhood issues (bf issue and so on) - I remembered while attending antenatal class, someone asked the gynea about stretch mark- her answer just simple.."itu tandanya anda dah jadi ibu

If you expect this entry to have baby checklist, I'm really sorry..not this time. I will try my best to share it later (yes it takes ages to finish an entry because so many commitment and sometimes I lost my mojo)

Hope this will be really worth reading esp for mom to be! Nak share kat yg lain pun boleh..sharing is caring! klu ada yg nk tambah pun most welcome. I might update this entry later by sharing perhaps like baby warehouse & expo review, and maybe checklist - so it will be complete reading..baca 1 entry tp mcm2 ada..hehehe

Phew..managed to get A to Z *tepuk sikit bahu..*

Till then

xoxo,

Penantian itu suatu...

..penyiksaan?

Owh, I really cannot decsribe my feeling right now...At first I thought I will be in delivery room latest by yesterday, but my instinct not so true...

Baby still active and sedap2 dlm perut...And its a mixed feeling since today 27/6..Dr already gave 29/6 as I should be admitted in case no show of delivery

Erm last time check up I do asked Dr, any possibility of overdue..she said positively "Insya Allah lg senang dan cepat sbb dh ada jalan last time.. even maybe awal sehari dua"

Gulp....Now its already masuk day +4...Adik xmahu keluar ke? Ibu sudah tidak lena tidur...hati sudah gundah gulana..setiap kali terjaga, dok rasa2 kot2 ada sakit pe2...mmg ada sakit but not likely sakit contraction yg nk bersalin

I do read about induce delivery..huhu takula plak kot2 klu kena c-sect..bkn pe I still have to take care Afham *ok2 even tho husband will take care him, tapi kan klu pe2 dia mmgla cari ibu dia jugak...hatta iphone husband pun dia akan bg ibu mainkan flash card so on*

Aiyo, then klu c-sect I really have no idea healing process mcmana..klu normal Insya Allah la klu kena dukung2 Afham ok lagi kot..sudahlah Afham mcm tak berapa nak dgn MIL....

Now I do not know what to expect..Ya Allah mudahkan urusan kelahiran ini..AMIN

Another overdue baby?

Ok.I'm still at home..

Started my maternity leave since Monday; despite Dr Hamidah said " Kerja smpi la rasa sakit nk beranak.."

For me I have few reasons to have early maternity leave...part of it because three months maternity leave..then past few months I'm super hectic with workload..(with all ad hoc, multi tasking and NO increment!). Then another thing pregnant and having baby-turns-to-toddler really makes me tired! So I want to have at least few days off rest..(rest pun sapu gak rumah, kemas sikit mainan anak, so on....)

Another thing Afham demam start hari Selasa malam Rabu tu! So kalau tak amik maternity leave pun still la agaknya kena EL/MC. His fever still on off

The rest...I have no idea bila adik nk keluar...part of me of course la nak hari ni/ esok..I don't want to be induce (Dr already set 29/6 hari untk serah diri..like last time pun mcm tu but end up Afham kuar jugak..Adik ikut abang jugak ke?) Smlm plak siap mimpi dh bersalin..adoi agaknya emosi dh terbawa2

Ada sapa2 nk share petua? (last time Dr siap pesan suh keep active, ehem2- ML...) Anak masuk dua dia xde dah pesan pe2*agak sbb anak dekat, still leh ingat lg*

Baby is not engaged...

*Auto post..so pepaham jelah might be masa post ni dh masuk labour room or maybe belum*

Yesterday went for check up with Dr Hamidah..suppose I have it on 21/6..but received call last week said she has meeting

So when entered the room, Dr asked me "Dah ada rasa nak bersalin tak ni?"...Then straight away my answer "Blom lg Dr..xde rasa sakit2 sagt..baby pun xengaged..." Thehe sambil sama2 gelak

Then as usual she scan and of course pegang2 perut....while said "Baby blom engage ni.." but kepala baby mmg kat bawah.

She said I should not worry too much (altho its at 39th weeks)..because baby can be engage at the very last minute (during labour), plus this is 2nd pregnancy for me and also she said my baby is not a big baby...estimated around 3kg (erk x cukup berat nk bg masuk laluan ke?). On top of that amniotic fluid ok, uri ok, baby actively kicking...so she said I just wait till the time

Oh ya she mentioned that I should try to sleep with 2 pillows...bagi kepala tinggi sikit and also banyakkan berjalan..(bagi baby engaged and also senang bersalin). Then Dr said she will be having training on 21-22/6...so in case I delivered on those days other Dr might be with me..

Now, we only can pray that baby will be poop out 23rd onwards..mau dgn Dr Hamidah jugak..Baby, dgr cakap ibu ye..keluar 23 ye??

Altho this is 2nd baby, I 'm still worried..the only thing worried with some experiences..so at least I know what to expect..and even can feel the diff baby engaged or not..(masa Afham 38wks dh engaged tp xbersalin awal pun..even 2 days overdue from edd)..

Oh ya, I do read here

One reason why second-time moms' babies sometimes don't engage until labor is because their uteruses have less tone than they did during their first pregnancy. Your body has now carried two babies to term, so your uterus could be expected to be larger and less toned than it was the first time.
The interesting thing that I have seen in the past is that moms who have had more than one baby will often dilate quite well even though the baby is very high. Sometimes the baby doesn't really move down until pushing begins.

Besides I copy from here "Pregnancy 2nd time around - labour and birth"

The experience that you gained during your first labour is usually a distinct advantage for second-time mums: You've researched birthing options, you know what the stages of labour are, you know how different the start of labour feels from Braxton Hicks, you may well have worked out what positions and methods of pain relief work well for you, and, of course, you know just how worth it it all is at the end. If you had a good birth experience last time around then you may even be looking forward to giving birth. But on the other hand, knowing what birth can entail can make you quite anxious about your second birth, particularly if your experience last time around was difficult or very painful. While you might end up having a very similar birth experience with your second baby, there's no reason to assume that this will be the case, as every baby and every birth is different.

Your older child
One thing will almost certainly be different this time around: You won't be as completely focused on your birthing experience in the days leading up to labour, and probably in early labour itself, as with your first. Unlike the last time around, you now have another child to take care of, and as you don't know when labour will start, your first child may be in your sole care when contractions begin. So, instead of only having to think about yourself and how you're going to make it through the contractions, you also need to think about how to take care of your child and how to manage the contractions when she is there, what, or how much, will you tell her about the contractions and what happens during birth. You'll probably be anxious to know when reinforcements are going to arrive to look after your first child, and how she'll cope with the whole experience. If this is something that 's causing you anxiety then do plan ahead with what you're going to tell your child and have at least one back-up plan for how she'll be taken care of once you go into labour. Remember that as labour can move very quickly this time around you'll want to have someone ready to look after her who can get to you quite quickly.

When will baby engage?
As with your first baby, there's no way of knowing exactly when your baby will turn and engage his head at the top of your cervix. What is true is that second babies often engage later than first babies, so if your first baby was head down over a week before you went into labour, don't be too surprised if this next one seems a little more nonchalant about getting into position.

Will I have a shorter labour this time?
Second labours are often shorter than first labours, but there's no guarantee that yours will be. If you had a vaginal birth with your last baby then your pelvis and vagina are already 'proven', they've stretched to allow a baby through once before, and so are usually more efficient at doing this the next time. But if your next labour is shorter than the first one it may also be more intense, precisely because the dilating of the cervix and the stretching of the pelvis and vagina happen more quickly.

Will this baby be bigger?
It's common for second babies to be a little bigger than first babies, but there is no hard and fast rule. Certainly this is nothing to worry about, as if you had a very big baby last time then you're more likely to have a slightly smaller baby than an even bigger one this time around.

How can I make sure it doesn't happen again?
If you didn't have the birth experience that you hoped for last time around, then you may be anxious to avoid the same kind of things happening this time. It may be that some of the details that you didn't like may be avoided next time around with a bit of preparation. For example, if you were unhappy with the care you received you might want to look into having your baby at a different birthing centre or hospital, or even at home. If you weren't happy with your midwives, or felt you would have done better if you'd built up a relationship with a particular midwife before-hand, then you can look into what options you have in that respect. If you tore or had an episiotomy last time, then try perineal massage leading up to labour, and see whether it's possible to give birth in a more upright position this time, which may help.

If you had a c-section with your last baby and you want to give birth vaginally this time around then, providing that you have a normal pregnancy, your chances are usually quite good. Have a read up on what you can do to prepare for a vaginal birth after caesarian or VBAC.

Whatever it is that is worrying you, talk it over with your midwife and antenatal class teacher (taking another course is a particularly good idea if you want a different labour experience this time), and see what suggestions they have for ways to prepare yourself.

However, whatever experience you're anxious to avoid repeating, remember that while you can do much to prepare for the birth experience you want, and you should have every confidence in your ability to birth, there's no way of knowing how your labour will go and try to avoid setting your heart on things happening in a certain way. How you approach this birth mentally can have a huge impact on how you later feel about how it went, and about any intervention that may turn out to be necessary.

Afterpains
Something that you should be aware of is that afterpains are often significantly more painful the second time around, particularly when you're breastfeeding your baby, so it's a good idea to be prepared with some painkillers that are compatible with breastfeeding.

So before pen off..for all readers kita mintak maaf banyak2..kotla la ada yg terguris , terasa ka with my writing..Moga2 dipermudahkanNya urusan kita bersalin, bf, pantang and so on (this time dh ada Afham...xtau la cmne handle toddler and baby..).Amin

Preparing the hospital bag...for the 2nd time

Okay since this is the 2nd time preparing hospital bag, I consider myself as an experienced one (despite I still asked my husband..saya bawak IC ke masa nk g bersalin yg lepas? Kes otak xberapa nk ingat...)

Ok skip the IC part..I knew that I bring the most important thing buku merah dan buku appointment Hosp Putrajaya..and the rest I still remembered that encik suami had to beli brg extra, berulang alik ke spital with things that I asked (ok plg best pesan suruh amik brg dlm kotak...end up encik suami bawak kotak itu ke hospital..nasib kotak xberapa nk besar)...and all happened because I never thought that I have to stay 4 days 3 nights due to Afham stayed in NICU...me myself ok..even Dr Hamidah said I can go home early

So this time, I don't want to burden him and he said he will be busy with work (projek kerja tgh masyuk..)..I try my best to pack all important things..and of course this time a little bit diff because he has to take care Afham (karang takut pesan mcm2..end up dia lupa ke hape kan)

My checklist for hospital bag

For baby

  • A pack of disposable diaper (my choice of kos newborn diapers with navel care..pusat baby belum tanggal lg kan..plus a pack tu at least 4-5 hari cukup..newborn kerap poo-poo/ passing meconium so standby with a pack much easier)

  • A pack of baby wipes

  • Towel

  • Toiletries, minyak telon/yuyi and baby oil

  • Baju baby – 2 pairs (1 should be enuff since pakai masa discharge..since masa di hospital baby pakai pampers dan dibedung kemas...but prepare extra in case needed)

  • Mitten + booties – 2 sets

  • Binder aka Barut – 2 helai

  • Cap

  • Bedung / receiving blanket/ hooded blanket (ni guna time nak balik la..klu xde hooded pun xpe since dh ada cap....)

  • Muslin square aka kain lampin - 2 helai (owh kain napkin/ lampin ni amat berguna..kalau baby termuak..boleh buat lap2..klu bedung dah terkotor ke, kain lampin ni boleh je jadik bedung...so standby ajelah untk multipurpose..klu yg xsuka kain lampin boleh la jugak bawah wash cloth)

Next list move to hospital bag for mommy..part husband xpe dia pandai jaga diri(hahaha..so xde lah pack brg dia)

Before I list down the things, I must recall all the things that hospital provides (to be specific Hosp Putrajaya, Executive Ward, FPP..karang ada yg baca ingat sume spital sama provide sume). Baju hospital provide for all days of stay start from admitted. Rasa ptg2 boleh tukar la kain in case dh kotor (ni pun ingat2 lupa). Bedsheet sume pagi2 setiap hari diorg tukar (again if not mistaken). Sehari few times ada amik BP, temperature so on.

Lg ada mini fridge (so in case nk store breastmilk dh senang), and last time if requested they can lend you breastpump Medela Lactina (but with only 1 bottle xsilap..and kena tggu diorang hantar brla dapat). Oh ya bilik jugak air cond (but can control temperature....tp kat luar lalu2 tu idakle boleh control tahap sejuknya)

For ibu

  • Buku merah plus kad appointment HPJ

  • Charger handphone (penting walau my handphone bkn berry-phoney)

  • Telekung (tp last time xsempat solat dh...tp pack ajelah kan)

  • Kain batik

  • Sweater

  • Stokin

  • Tungku moden (I think this time I need to bring...dh beli elokla bawak kan? Last time x de tungku moden ni..mengharap bertungku time urut ngan kakak urut)

  • Hot oil (my fave Minyak Herbanika NR)

  • Pengikat rambut

  • Towel

  • Toiletries & comb

  • Maternity pad

  • Plastic (for laundry)

  • Disposable cotton panties (some said not hygienic, but for me it makes my life easier)

  • Nursing bras and disposable breast pad (tapi breast pad x pakai pun masa kat hospital last time...but xpe bawak je..karang encik suami nk mencarik 1 hal plak nk explain simpan kt ne dlm umah..)

  • Breast pump and also bottles (standby kot2 kena tahan mcm yg lepas)

  • Going back clothes and tudung sarung

  • Air / minyak selusush/ air zam zam/ kurma / akar Fatimah...(last time masa masuk labour room, nurse bagi bawak masuk air selusuh, but last time I only amik minyak selusuh..so xdela...this time MIL ada buatkan air selusuh..so blhla masuk list)

  • Food and drink for snacking (tgkle maybe bw biskut yg dh pack comel2 tu dan also milo 3 in 1 kot but always in my list mesti bawa kurma)

  • Book / Magazine / Yasin / Buku doa (klu mag boleh je suh encik suami beli kat kedai magazine bawah...so tgk space dl..klu ada kita sumbat la ape yg patut)

  • Camera

For wallet and handphone, I think masih sempat diambil..selipar xpayah masuk list kto sbb mmg pakai selipar (ok2 den bkn mommy vogue). The rest should be enuff kot..

I just completed the packing yesterday (hamik..last minute gak), then I have mixed feeling about Afham still small to understand that he will be big brother soon..then I 'm worried because I feel that baby is not engaged yet..(kepala mmg kat bawah cuma mcm blm masuk laluan...). Will this be 2nd time overdue? Erm xtahu On top of that, I also managed to get Afham a gift (belated birthday, cum toy that I hope can distract him a while, while I'm juggling with new baby)

It is Busy Zoo which I wrote earlier here. I get it RM200 including postage...all the way from Penang (ok encik suami nanti bolehla tlg bukak ye..dh dkt 2 bulan toy tu disimpan....)

Should I call it panic attack?

About less than 3 weeks we will having our 2nd baby...but the fact tones of things still not settled

The fact that
- still not complete packed hospital bag for baby...just partial done
- still not packed my hospital bag
- still not settled with kemas 1 rumah...planning this time confinement duduk dlm bilik bawah..last time belasah naik tangga time pantang..kali ni mau lebih proper
- still not buying few items that I think its better this time I have it
- still not finished transfer knowledge to temp staff

The most important thing..adalah belum habis ganti puasa! *Ok masa Syawal hari tu ada buat puasa 6, setelah tnya ustaz baca few links boleh segregate dan dahulukan puasa 6, lps tu buatlah puasa ganti..untk dapat pahala yg dinyatakan..masa tu mmg tak de plan pregnant...yakin Afham akan dpt adik bila dia dh besar sikit,,skrg mcmana? klu kira2 rasa ada dlm seminggu jugak lagi nk kena ganti*

Aduhai..apesal lg bnyk outstanding list nih? pdhal pregnant 2nd tuh..or should I blame workload and never ending fatigue that I have?

Mintak2 by end of this weekend I can strike few things...and ganti puasa latest by next week..Insya Allah.Amin

Asthma during pregnancy

During 1st pregnancy I have never ending coughing problem..Its like on off..and of course I have to visit doctor frequently..doctor also cannot do anything and just said "pembawaan budak"..So on off I have consume herbal cough syrup and lozenges given by doctor...Not to mentioned after some times I do not take any medicines or check with doctors..*letih muka sama problem sama*

When I started having check up with Dr Hamidah, I told my on off problem and she prescribed me with inhaler..Seems it works although I always think that I do not have asthma problem.

Then after delivery, I have no coughing problem..It back to normal

Until just recently before CNY, I started to cough again. Encik suami asked me to use back the inhaler..but nothing much. On Maulidur Rasul night I had a serious cough till I cannot sleep..start to wheezes. I just visit the same doctor and she said she will refer me to specialist at Columbia Asia due to prolong cough that I have.

At Columbia, the doctor told me at certain stage during pregnancy asthma can be worst although those days I do not have asthma history. So on that moment I knew that besides diabetic and high blood pressure that attack pregnant women, asthma is the other thing *kan ada yg kena kencing manis, darah tinggi time pregnant je..begitu jugaklah dgn asma ni*

Alhamdulillah he treated me with nebulizer and inhaler..it works at least I stop wheezing although that night I still cannot sleep..But for the rest of the day I can sleep.

When I met Dr Hamidah last week, suddenly I start cough again. Nak tak nak kenala cerita, and coincidently at the same time there is medical doctor. So she advice me to continue using inhaler (Budesonide) until to some stage I do not cough.

So next check up Dr Hamidah put me on the day that have combine clinic, which will be 24/3-2pm *sapa gi check time ni sila2la tegur..leh wat kawan..hahaha bosan tggu sorg2*

Then I also google and found this from here - http://www.webmd.com/asthma/tc/asthma-during-pregnancy-topic-overview

Asthma is a fairly common health problem for pregnant women, including some women who have never had it before. During pregnancy, asthma not only affects you, but it can also cut back on the oxygen your fetus gets from you. But this does not mean that having asthma will make your pregnancy more difficult or dangerous to you or your fetus. Pregnant women with asthma that is properly controlled generally have a normal pregnancy with little or no increased risk to themselves or their fetus.

Most asthma treatments are safe to use when you are pregnant. After years of research, experts now say that it is far safer to manage your asthma with medicine than it is to leave asthma untreated during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor about the safest treatment for you.

Risks of uncontrolled asthma to pregnant women

If you have not previously had asthma, you may not think that shortness of breath or wheezing during your pregnancy is asthma. If you know you have asthma, you may not consider it a concern if you only have mild symptoms. But asthma can affect you and your fetus, and you should act accordingly.

If your asthma is not controlled, risks to your health include:

Risks to the fetus include:

  • Death immediately before or after birth (perinatal mortality).
  • Abnormally slow growth of the fetus (intrauterine growth retardation). When born, the baby appears small.
  • Birth before the 37th week of pregnancy (preterm birth).
  • Low birth weight.

The more control you have over your asthma, the less risk there is.

Asthma treatment and pregnancy
Pregnant women manage asthma the same way nonpregnant women do. Like all people with asthma, pregnant women should have an asthma action plan to help them control inflammation and prevent and control asthma attacks. Part of a pregnant woman's action plan should also include recording fetal movements. You can do this by noting whether fetal kicks decrease over time. If you notice less fetal activity during an asthma attack, contact your doctor or emergency help immediately to receive instructions.

Considerations for treatment of asthma in pregnant women include the following:

  • If more than one health professional is involved in the pregnancy and asthma care, they must communicate with each other about treatment. The obstetrician must be involved with asthma care.2
  • Monitor lung function carefully throughout your pregnancy to ensure that your growing fetus gets enough oxygen. Because asthma severity changes for about two-thirds of women during pregnancy, you should have monthly checkups with your doctor to monitor your symptoms and lung function.2 Your doctor will use either spirometry or a peak flow meter to measure your lung function.
  • Monitor fetal movements daily after 28 weeks.
  • Consider ultrasounds after 32 weeks to monitor fetal growth if your asthma is not well controlled or if you have moderate or severe asthma.2Ultrasound exams can also help your doctor check on the fetus after an asthma attack.
  • Try to do more to avoid and control asthma triggers (such as tobacco smoke or dust mites), so that you can take less medicine if possible. Many women have nasal symptoms, and there may be a link between increased nasal symptoms and asthma attacks. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), which is common in pregnancy, may also cause symptoms.
  • It is important that you have extra protection against influenza. Be sure to get the influenza vaccine before the flu season starts-sometime from October to mid-November-whether you are in your first, second, or third trimester at the time.3 The flu vaccine is effective for one season. The flu vaccine is safe in pregnancy and is recommended for all pregnant women.

Asthma and allergies
Many women also have allergies, such as allergic rhinitis, along with asthma. Treating allergies is an important part of asthma management.

- Inhaled corticosteroids at recommended doses are effective and can be used by pregnant women.

- The antihistamines loratadine or cetirizine are recommended.

- If you are already taking allergy shots, you may continue getting them, but starting allergy shots during pregnancy is not recommended.

- Talk to your doctor about using decongestants you take by mouth (oral decongestants). There may be better treatment options.

Asthma medicines and pregnancy

A review of the animal and human studies on the effects of asthma medicines taken during pregnancy found few risks to the woman or her fetus. It is safer for a pregnant woman with asthma to be treated with asthma medicines than for her to have asthma symptoms and asthma attacks.2 Poor control of asthma is a greater risk to the fetus than asthma medicines are.2Budesonide is labeled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as the safest inhaled corticosteroid to use during pregnancy. One study found that low-dose inhaled budesonide in pregnant women seemed to be safe for the mother and the fetus.4

Never stop taking or reduce your medicines without talking to your doctor. You might have to wait until your pregnancy is over to make changes in your medicine.

Always talk to your doctor before using any medicine when you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

Pregnancy check up and “ada jumpa blogger ke?”

Since this is my 2nd pregnancy, I think its time for me to share with you esp if you are new mum to be. Oh ya disclaimer, this is write based on personal experience since I am not medical student =p

The moment that you know that you are pregnant, it can be clueless for you and ur husband..esp if you have no sister(s) and you might be shy to ask ur friends, colleagues, and even ur mum (not my case my mum passed away..so I learned here and there. Kdg2 encik suami kata "ibu ni belajar macam2 sume kat internet"..erk nk buat cmne kan?)

For the newly wed, pls don't do pregnancy test right after ur very first night...nope. It takes time for you to know u r pregnant. The kit is only to test ur pregnancy if ur period delayed by few days (if u have normal cycle). And don't be surprised if you notice it will be –ve result (sometimes baru2 kawen, hormone changes, ur mood also maybe changing..so sometimes it false alarm)

There are a lot of choices for the pregnancy kit. For me I never bought the expensive one, instead choose the price range rm8-10..because usually I will do it twice. The correct timing to do it is actually from the first urine since the hormone is high it will be easily detected by kit. However bear in mind, we are unique..some even actually pregnant even tho their hormone is low (tester might show blur image), but when it comes to scan actually pregnant.

Right after u confirmed pregnant, I recommend 3 things

  1. Do early scan
  2. Pregnancy check up
  3. Take care urself

Although our parents, grandparents might not encouraged to do early scan, I do not think it as good idea. The reason of early scan is to know whether it is a normal pregnancy (samada kandungan itu dalam rahim atau di luar rahim). So even tho u still not sure where u want to have proper check up, it always recommend to have first scan (usually you have to go clinic and pay it as company might not cover pregnancy scan in the medical card)

When it comes to pregnancy check up, it all depends on ur choice either government, private or even both. However it is always recommend to have check up at government as they have "Buku Merah" which ur pregnancy book that can be use at govt and private hospital as well. In case u deliver at private, but having serious complications u might be transferred to government hospital. You can always mixed, as long as you have a proper record that can be use when u want to deliver.

If you plan to have a check up at government clinic, here the step

  1. Find the gov clinic nearby ur house. You always can check here http://moh.gov.my/gov_clinics. When it comes to check up, u cannot simply go any government clinic, instead they have covered the respective areas..
  2. In case ur area have several clinic, kindly check the nearest
  3. Call them (otherwise you might waste ur time and might be rejected as they have "kawasan jajahan"). When call ask the following question:-
  • Do they have klinik ibu mengandung?
  • I am staying here..(state ur address.eg Taman XYZ), can I have pregnancy check up there?
  • when I can start pregnancy check up? Immediately of after specific weeks (I noticed that some areas start immediately, some later..myself when I call last time the clinic only accept after 14 weeks and above, maybe because a lot of pregnant mom and they want those that already stable)
  • Is it open Monday – Friday? Or any specific days?
  • What time..start - end ?
  • Anything to bring?

When it comes to pregnancy, different mom have different experience (even same mom might have different experience by comparing 1st, 2nd, 3rd or even more). In general just take care of urself, eat balanced diet and healthily, take all vitamins given, have enough rest (esp if 1st pregnancy sila lah tidur sepuas2nya! Dh ada anak tidur pun kdg2 xcukup...letih kerja office, kerja rumah, itu dan ini). Plus please do not do heavy workloads esp in first trimester..First trimester is always consider fragile.

Oh ya..you also can subscribe pregnancy updates at http://www.babycenter.com.my/. They will send on weekly basis ..week by week development

Second part of this entry, since I do received email asking about FPP..I told my husband that there are readers of my blog asking question and they do sign up for FPP..Then husband asked me "ada jumpa blogger ke masa gi checkup?” Then I said dunno...

For 2nd pregnancy, I continue with Dr Hamidah..as comfortable with her (plus I afraid I will get nurse at KK nagging me since the gap 1st and 2nd is close!)

So until now I'm not sure whether when I do check up at Putrajaya, I meet any of blogger or silent readers of this blog...In case you bump me there..pls say hi to me. Because for this time pregnancy check up, husband just send and fetch me.It is hard to get parking in afternoon (plus I cannot go early as the schedule always at 2pm..and I have to come all the way from office in KL...)

So if you see me alone, dont be shy...maybe later we can have a chat (esp waiting time..). Till then
